The 22nd edition of Open Roads: New Italian Cinema, is taking place in NYC on June 1-8, and you don’t won’t to miss it!
Luca and I have been invited to the opening-night on June 1st, screening Francesca Archibugi‘s The Hummingbird – an adaptation of Sandro Veronesi’s award-winning novel – followed by Q&A, and it was an incredible experience!
We immersed ourselves in the life of Marco Carrera, brilliantly portrayed by Pierfrancesco Favino, unfolded in unexpected ways, in a kaleidoscopic, non-chronological (and still incredibly clear to follow) journey. Archibugi’s masterful storytelling and all actors’ performance took us on an emotional rollercoaster of love, drama, and self discovery: the movie is a truly mesmerizing masterpiece.
The film festival is co-presented by Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute and support from Casa Italian Zeerilli Marimò at NYU, and runs till June 8. Make sure to go!
All films are in Italian with English subtitles (unless otherwise noted), and will screen at the Walter Reade Theater (165 W. 65th Street NYC).

At this year’s Open Roads, they pay homage to Mario Martone (a perennial presence in the festival’s lineup) by showcasing his most recent fiction film alongside two essential works from earlier in his career:
