Spoiler alert: Times Square might be the world’s most iconic New Year’s Eve celebration, but it’s not for everyone.
Fun Fact: When we first moved to NYC, in 2007, we were so naive – LOL. At that time, we were living in Astoria, Queens and we had friends over for dinner. We hopped on the subway around 11pm to make it to Times Square… When we noticed that all subway stops close to Times Square were closed, we got off at the closest one: 59th Street and 5th Ave. That’s where a very kind policeman broke the news about HOW CRAZY attending the NYE in Times Square is, and he suggested we spend the night in Central Park – which, of course, I listed below 😉
Crowds, long waits, and freezing temperatures aren’t everyone’s idea of fun – and that’s okay! NYC has so much more to offer. From outdoor free events to NYC’s observatory parties, here’s your ultimate guide to ringing in the New Year, Times Square-free!
1. Celebrate Outdoors
If you love being outdoors, NYC offers several unique celebrations.
Pro Tip: Stay warm wearing layers, gloves, hats, and hand and foot warmers + an Ororo heated vest – it’s still winter in New York!
The annual fireworks over Central Park and Prospect Park have been cancelled for this year due to the ongoing drought and recent park fires. However, the Midnight Run in Central Park organizers are “exploring other festive options”, and in Brooklyn, there will be a light show powered by drones representing the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty! These options will still be incredibly fun:
- 🏃♂️Central Park NYE Run: Join the annual NYRR Midnight Run (starting at $55 for members) through Central Park – registration is required. It’s only 4 miles and it’s definitely one of the most electrifying ways to get into 2025! Pro Tip: It also helps runners qualify for the NYC Marathon! There’s also music and dancing for everyone leading up to the race, usually at Central Park Bandshell, on the east side of the park at 68th Street, from 10 pm to past midnight.
- 🚴♀️ Bike into 2025: The Annual NYE Bike Ride organized by Time’s Up is happening again. It’s FREE, and you can join the group with your own bike or skates at 3 meet-up locations:
– 9:45pm at the Brooklyn-side entrance to the Williamsburg Bridge
– 10pm at Washington Square Park Arch
– 10:20pm at Madison Square Park, 23rd & Broadway, Flatiron side
You’ll be riding up to Belvedere Castle in Central Park, followed by an after-party full of dance, noise-makers and focusing on positivity and bringing people together for the future.
- 🎆 Battery Park Fireworks Show: Head to Battery Park to see the fireworks near the Statue of Liberty. Just a heads up: it might be more crowded than usual since other fireworks have been cancelled.
- ✨ Prospect Park Drone Show: Head to Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn for a drone show over Prospect Park starting at 10pm – the event is FREE and will include live entertainment by Quintessential Playlist.
