Today I attended the virtual press conference of the highly-anticipated art installation: date and location of the opening have been revealed!!
The Immersive Van Gogh is opening on June 10, 2021, at Pier 36, 299 South Street.
I was intrigued by the idea of stepping into a painting when I saw it in episode 5 of Emily in Paris – my friends Alex, Carmelina and Francesca suggested me to watch the series as they believe I should change my blog name into Laura in New York City (should I!?) 😂
Why Van Gogh and why now?
Massimiliano Siccardi created a Van Gogh’s Starry Night Exhibition in Paris and wanted to do something a little more edgy and psychological. Pre pandemic, the public already loved the show… Van Gogh struggled with depression, mental illness and isolation; now here we are, 130 years after he passed away and the art still transcends: we can all relate to in this unique circumstances.
The Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit already wowed Paris, Toronto, Chicago and San Francisco.
In NYC there will be digital projections of over 40 Van Gogh’s masterpieces, chosen from over 400 licensed images collected from museum around the world.
Massimiliano Siccardi, the “Stephen Spielberg of digital art“, worked together with Art Director Vittorio Guidotti, composer Luca Longobardi and in NYC they brought on board set designer David Korins (Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen) as Creative Director.
Pier 36 – over 70.000 sqft exhibition space by the water – will be transformed into a truly one-of-a-kind venue. Korins contributed with his own artistic sensibility to “plus up” Massimiliano’s insightful and poetic piece. He added new vantage points with tiered observation platforms and intricate mirrored sculptures to allow people to deep within a very personal and profound journey of Van Gogh’s work.
The show combines 3 concepts: art exhibiting, animated film making and experiential (the public walks through the space and the art happens in 360-degree around them).
Massimiliano Siccardi deconstructed the raw material, sampled little and precise details together with the entire painting and animated them and blurred one piece into another like a stream of consciousness. The idea behind was to capture what might have flashed before Van Gogh’s eyes moments before he passed away.
The exhibition will take you behind the scenes, into Van Gogh psychology. The focus on the artist Van Gogh and on the man, Vincent, who modified the perception of reality conditioning the future of humanity itself. His relationship with his brother and his sister in law conditioned and propelled him to be gifted in hearing sounds as colors.
Now the paintings animations are choreographed to a contemporary and classical music composed by Luca Longobardi.
Music recalls memories and enriches the experience. Music and images go together as much as narrative and emotions.
Immersive Van Gogh invites audience to experience the brushstrokes and colors like never before, evoking the painter’s highly emotional and chaotic inner consciousness through art, light, music, movement and imagination. You won’t just stand there and look at the paintings, there’s a ton of new dynamic viewing levels that will leave you with free mind and open heart while you’ll experience a deeper level of appreciation of Van Gogh’s art.
Immersive Van Gogh will be on view in New York City through September 6, 2021.
It will then make its way to more cities in the US… in each location you’ll have the opportunity to have a unique experience of the installation.
New Yorkers and visitors can enjoy Vincent Van Gogh’s work safely and this exhibition will definitely act as a catalyst to bring the visitors back: “NYC is open for business” – as Christopher Heywood (NYC & company) said.
